The Allens accused Zonis of posting intimate photos and videos, sending them to friends and family and initiating a campaign of harassment. After a jury sided with the Allens and awarded the record-setting verdict, Zonis denied the charges and appealed.   Britain will tackle “the Wild West elements” on the internet from cyber-bullying to online child exploitation by introducing new laws for social media companies, digital minister Matt Hancock said on 20 May. Launching a consultation on what measures should be used to ensure the safety of those using the internet, Hancock said the government would publish a white paper — a policy document that sets out proposals for future legislation — later this year and aim to bring in new laws “in the next couple of years”. ST.LOUIS, MO-  Missouri lawmakers unanimously approved a bill banning Revenge Porn.  The proposal would make distributing a sexual image of someone without their consent a felony. It also outlaws threatening to make the image public in order to prevent someone from doing something or to gain something of value. The proposal was in the works long before Governor Eric Greitens was charged with a felony for allegedly taking a partially nude photo of his ex-mistress. Source link

Glen Canning and Susan McClelland Rehtaeh Parsons’s father, Glen Canning, will co-write a book about his daughter’s sexual assault and subsequent suicide, to be published by Goose Lane Editions in 2020. The book will be co-written with journalist and non-fiction author Susan McClelland. The deal was arranged by Rob Firing at the Transatlantic Agency. Canning, who speaks to high schools and universities about violence prevention, has called the book a memorial to his daughter that also contextualizes her tragedy within systemic societal failures, such as rape culture and victim blaming. He will also interrogate his own personal history, including his experience of being abused as a child by a family member.   Ongoing concerns that the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association, with its intimate understanding of boarding school pressures, was left off the Queensland Anti-Cyberbullying Taskforce, continued to be voiced strongly at the recent state conference in Winton. These were originally raised by ICPA’s state council in the wake of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s announcement of the taskforce in February, saying at the time that ICPA’s omission from the 14-member taskforce was short-sighted and made no sense.   Google has always allowed people to request certain content, like a malicious website or copies of your contact information, to be removed from search results. The company already had a policy for removing private images or videos, but now it’s taking fake pornographic content more seriously. Google now has a support page dedicated to removing “involuntary fake pornography,” with instructions that people can follow to report said content. For a request to be accepted, the person reporting the content has to be the person depicted in the fake imagery. The company notes that this process only removes the requested content from Google search results, not from the sites actually hosting it.   A Williamsport woman charged with distribution of child pornography is accused of uploading explicit images from a minor’s cellphone onto the internet. Ashley Nicole Grove, 28, was charged this week by summons for an incident first reported by the victim on Jan. 2, according to the charging document filed by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office in District Court. One of the charges was under Maryland’s revenge porn statute. The teenager told investigators that Grove posted the photos of her performing sexual acts on a male to Facebook, the document said. The victim said “she had several broken cell phones which she gave to” Grove, the document said. The victim told investigators that she gave a subscriber identification module (SIM) card to Grove, unaware that it contained images of her nude and having sex, the document said. A Colorado law designed to punish people for revenge porn — posting intimate photos of former lovers or spouses on the internet typically following a break-up — has resulted in nearly 200 charges since it was passed three years ago, but securing convictions and guilty pleas has been a challenge. There have been 192 misdemeanor cases for non-consensual pornography filed since House Bill 14-1378 became law in July 2014. Just over a third of those have resulted in guilty pleas or verdicts, reflecting the difficulty of proving the cases but also, possibly, weaknesses in the law. While law enforcement officials and victims advocates praised the law’s success, they remained measured because, The Denver Post found, many cases have been either dismissed or set aside in plea-bargain deals. SALT LAKE CITY — The U.S. Justice Department has called it “by far the most significantly growing threat to children.” And based on recent investigations, the issue of “sextortion” isn’t slowing down, including in Utah. Sextortion is a form of online blackmail, typically targeting teenagers or preteens. The average sextortion case starts with children who are 12 to 14 years old who are using social media and other apps to message others who they assume are also juveniles, said Steve Cagen, head of U.S. Homeland Security Investigations in Utah and three other states. Attorney-at-Law and Child Rights Specialist Ricardo Sandcroft is calling for legislation to address issues such as revenge porn and cyberbullying affecting Jamaican teens. Children’s Advocate Diahann Gordon Harrison on Tuesday said there was a direct correlation between increasing cases of revenge porn among high-school students and the lack of legislation to tackle cyberbullying locally.
